Everything You Need to Know Before You Go Wedding Dress Shopping
Wedding dress shopping is one of the most exciting parts of planning, but it can also feel a little overwhelming if you don’t know what to expect. A bit of preparation can make the experience feel fun, calm, and actually enjoyable instead of stressful. Here’s what you need to know before you go:
Look for inspiration, but stay open-minded
It’s helpful to gather inspiration beforehand so you can get a sense of what you’re drawn to, whether that’s a full lace gown, a silk mermaid dress or anything in between. But try not to get too attached to one specific dress or silhouette. Many brides end up falling in love with something completely different than what they originally imagined, and being open allows you to actually enjoy the process instead of trying to force a vision.

Book your appointment early
Start dress shopping earlier than you think you need to. Most wedding dresses take months to arrive and then additional time for alterations. Booking your appointments in advance also gives you access to better availability and a less rushed experience, which makes a big difference when you’re trying on something this important. We always recommend looking at least 1 year out from your wedding day, if your planning timeline allows.
Keep your group small
Bring people who know you well and will support your decision, not overwhelm you with too many opinions. A smaller, trusted group is almost always better than a large entourage. You want voices that help you feel confident, not confused.
Know your budget
Before you walk into a boutique, have a realistic budget range set for your dress, including alterations. It helps your stylist guide you to the right options and prevents you from falling in love with something that isn’t aligned with your overall budget.

Don’t worry about the size
Bridal sizing is not the same as regular clothing sizing, and it runs differently depending on the designer. The number on the tag is not a reflection of your actual size or how the dress will look on you. Focus on fit, not the label.
Try on more than one time
Giving yourself space between appointments can help you process how you feel about different dresses. Sometimes clarity comes after stepping away, and it can be helpful to revisit options with a fresh perspective rather than trying to make a rushed decision in one day. If you’re able to, we recommend using your first appointment to discover the shapes and styles you’re naturally drawn to, then using your second appointment to focus specifically on dresses within that category.
Move in the dress
Once you’re trying on dresses, don’t just look in the mirror. Sit down, walk around, and even dance a little. You want to make sure you can actually live in the dress comfortably throughout your wedding day, not just stand still in it in a fitting room.

Do your hair and makeup
You don’t need a full glam moment, but doing your hair and makeup in a way that makes you feel like yourself can completely change how you experience dress shopping. It helps you better visualize the full bridal look and feel more confident in your choices.
Wedding dress shopping should feel like a meaningful, memorable experience, not a stressful one. With a little preparation and the right mindset, you can focus less on pressure and more on finding the dress that truly feels like you!
