The Ideal Wedding Timeline: How Long Should A Wedding Last?
One of the most common questions we receive from our couples is, "How long should our wedding be?" While every celebration is unique, we've found that there is a timeline that works especially well for most weddings.
As seasoned wedding planners who have planned and coordinated countless weddings, we've seen firsthand what creates a celebration that feels relaxed, enjoyable, and never rushed. For a typical American wedding where the ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception all take place at the same venue, we generally recommend planning for 5.5 to 6 hours from the start of the ceremony to the end of the reception. This timeline allows plenty of time for each part of the celebration without making the day feel rushed or overly long.
Of course, every wedding is different. Your timeline may vary depending on your guest count, cultural or religious traditions, transportation logistics, venue requirements, and the overall experience you want to create. Think of these recommendations as a starting point that can be customized to fit your wedding day.

Ceremony: 30 Minutes
For a non-religious ceremony, 30 minutes is typically the perfect length. This provides enough time for the processional, welcome, readings (if included), vows, ring exchange, first kiss, and recessional.
If you're incorporating religious traditions, cultural ceremonies, or special elements, your ceremony may last anywhere from 45 to 60 minutes.
Cocktail Hour: 60-75 Minutes
Cocktail hour is the perfect transition between your ceremony and reception. We recommend planning for 60 to 75 minutes, giving guests enough time to enjoy drinks and appetizers while your photographer captures family portraits, wedding party photos, and newlywed portraits.
If you complete a first look before the ceremony, your cocktail hour can stay at 60 minutes since you'll be able to complete the majority of your photos beforehand. If you choose not to do a first look, we typically recommend extending cocktail hour closer to 75 minutes. This gives your photographer enough time to capture all of your pictures after the ceremony without feeling rushed.

Reception: 4-4.5 Hours
The reception is where the celebration truly begins. A 4 to 4.5-hour reception gives you enough time to enjoy every major event without feeling rushed.
This typically includes:
Grand entrance
First dance
Welcome toast
Dinner service
Parent dances
Toasts and speeches
Cake cutting or dessert
Open dancing
Late-night snack (if applicable)
Grand exit or send-off
This timeframe allows guests to enjoy the evening while still keeping the energy high from beginning to end.

For most weddings with everything happening at one venue, 5.5 to 6 hours is the sweet spot. It provides enough time to celebrate with your guests, enjoy each element, and soak in every moment without the day dragging on.
